GASTRIC BYPASS
A small pouch is created from the top portion of the stomach. The intestine is re-routed and connected to the pouch. The intestine is joined together at the “Y” to provide continuity. This provides a severe restriction in how the new diet has to be taken. Similar to the Lap Band, patients must eat very slowly and take small amounts to avoid discomfort or vomiting. Additionally, problems with dumping (feeling ill, sweats, heart racing, flushed/hot, diarrhea) will usually develop if an incorrect diet is taken. This usually occurs with food or drink high in sugar content (candy, regular soda, ice cream). The unpleasant side effects of dumping usually serve as a deterrent to taking this type of diet.
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass diagram
Weight loss is more rapid than Lap Band with most of the weight being removed in the first year. People may choose Gastric Bypass because of its long track record and the reinforcement that the dumping provides. People may not choose it because of the more complicated surgery and higher possible risks. A Gastric Bypass patient must be on life-long vitamin supplements to prevent a deficiency from developing. Complications and risks will be discussed in detail at the consultation.
