LAP BAND

Via a minimally invasive surgical procedure, a silicone band is placed at the top of the stomach. A small pouch is created, and a small opening that food must pass through is the result of the surgery. This will severely restrict the patient's new diet. Patient's must eat very slowly and take small amounts of food at a time. If this is not done, patients will vomit or develop significant discomfort. It will also decrease or eliminate the hunger drive.

Weight loss is slower than the gastric bypass because it takes some time to adjust the band to the correct level for each person. This adjustment process occurs primarily over the first year. Adjustments are done under a local anesthetic in the office by placing a needle into the port and injecting or removing saline. Average weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week.
Laparoscopic surgery
Laparoscopic banding surgery.
Success with the lap band requires a motivated and compliant patient. Patients must be willing to come in for follow-up visits/adjustments once a month for the first year. They must also avoid problem foods like chocolate, ice cream, and regular soda. Patients may choose Lap Band because it has lower risks and it is adjustable. However, patients may not choose Lap Band because it is a foreign body and they don't want to have to go through the needle adjustments. Complications and risks will be discussed in detail at the consultation.
