SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass diagram

A Sleeve Gastrectomy is a restrictive procedure, which limits the amount of food you can eat by reducing the size of your stomach. during this procedure a thin vertical sleeve of stomach is created using a stapling device. This sleeve will typically hold between 50 to 150ml, or is about the size of a skinny banana. the excised portion of the stomach is removed. Advantages to this surgery include:

  • It restricts the amount of food that can be consumed.
  • Digestion and absorption are normal, allowing it to be fully absorbed in the body.
  • There are no postoperative adjustments that need to be made
  • Has high resolution rates of type 2 diabetes, hypertention, hyperlipidemia and sleep apnea
  • Can expect approximately 60% excess weight loss

Disadvantages include:

  • Surgery is non-reversible
  • Other risks associated with bariatric surgery (visit with your surgeon)
